American Megafauna

(Sierra Madre Games)

Second Edition 2001

$40

American Megafauna pits dinosaurs against mammals in ancient America. The game is designed for two to four players, from ages 9 to adult, or can be played solitaire. It recreates the titanic contest of these two types of prehistoric beasts from the Triassic to the present. The contest initially appeared to be won by the dinosaurs, who strutted triumphant for 170 million years, only to be overthrown, in what must be the upset of the eon, by the mammals. Yet the contest is not over.

This is a game of ecology, evolution, and DNA. Players start as one of four nondescript archetypes, but can branch out to new species from this basic type by bidding on genotype and DNA cards as they are revealed. For auction "currency," players use gene coins from a "gene pool." DNA cards allow players to create strange animals, from cud-chewing crocodiles with antlers, to saber-tooth meat-eating camels.

In the the advanced version, the continent of Laurentia is occasionally flooded or glaciated; greenhouse levels change; and the three Milankovitch cycles are handled by cards that occur with historical probabilities. Biome cards, including cycad prairies, mountains, ice sheets, and mangrove swamps, appear on the map in succession according to "climax" ratings.

Angola

(Ragnar Brothers)

Back in Print

£14.99

Photo

Angola is available from Ragnar Brothers. Angola is a simulation of the civil war which afflicted that country from February 1975 to March 1976. It would probably be termed a 'war game' in most circles. They call it a game of Command and Decision which sounds pretentious but does accurately capture the essence of Angola - the decisions a player makes about how he or she orders the elements of his or her command are the crucial factors that determine the outcome of combat and the capture of towns.

Angola is a game that requires some dedicated rules reading but is easily explained to others once one kind hearted soul has got to grips with it. The effort made will be well rewarded by a game that really cranks the tension up as each player waits to see which units are moving in each turn - the command orders are hidden, well turned face down actually and only revealed one at a time as the turn proceeds.

This game was out of print but has recently been re-released and now says its a 1 - 4 player game (original says 2 -4)

Dragon Strike

TSR

1993

Photo

DragonStrike was a 1993 adventure board game from TSR Inc based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. DragonStrike was intended to serve as an introduction to the D&D role-playing game, and used greatly simplified versions of the Basic D&D rules. The game came with several fold-out maps for use as the board, a number of plastic miniatures to represent the player characters and monsters, and various other game pieces. Also included were several pre-written quests available for play, including several single-player adventures. Its most distinctive feature, however, was the inclusion of a video tutorial on how to play the game.

The game mechanism simulates a spreading forest fire which the players try to bring under control. They place firefighters in different parts of the forest and try to achieve two objectives:
to fight the most dangerous fires to earn points (adding up high numbers) and to occupy at least one water source (player's points are divided by the lowest number they occupy).

The fire limits the spaces where people can be placed and eliminates water sources. The direction of the fire's spread is determined by the current situation and can be guessed quite accurately by watching the game closely. It is a highly territorial game with lots of blocking and chasing. The game also includes a solitaire and a cooperative variant.

Flying Colors

GMT

2005

Photo

Flying Colors recreates naval actions during the height of the Age of Sail, from small engagements to full battles involving dozens of ships in each fleet. Play is fast, furious, and does not require the pre-plotted movement found in many other naval games. Instead, a simple initiative and command system allows players to activate and manoeuvre their fleets in a realistic manner, indicating how older commanders adhered to rules of engagement where more forward thinking commanders, like Nelson, could retain control of their fleets after the first broadsides began to be exchanged.

This is not a strategic level game where one piece represents several ships. Flying Colors includes 300 individually named ships rated for size, gunnery, boarding ability, and damage capacity. Also included are nearly four dozen individually named commanders, rated for their ability to control their formations as well as the impact of their presence within the fleet. The game system provides what naval enthusiasts will expect in a tactical Age of Sail game: broadsides, rakes, anchoring, wind effects, weather, shore batteries, and much more. All this is packed into a short, accessible rulebook.

Sticks and stones or even dynamite and lassoes or broken chairs can be part of your arsenal. The 8 boards are two sided with town scenes on one side and open country one the other. Each player has a hand to play from which both limits and allows actions. A roleplaying campaign of linked scenarios is possible. Lord of the Rings

$44.95

Lord of the Rings is a co-operative game where the object is to destroy the Ring while surviving the corrupting influence of Sauron. Each player plays one of the Hobbits in the fellowship, each of which has a unique power. The game is played on a number of boards: the Master board indicates both the physical progress of the fellowship across Middle Earth and the corrupting influence of Sauron on the hobbits, and a number of scenario boards which detail the events and adventures of particular locations. Progression across the boards is determined by playing cards (many of which represent the characters and items of Middle Earth), and the effects of corruption are represented by a special die. The game is lost if the ring-bearer is overcome by Sauron, or won if the ring is destroyed by throwing it into the volcanic fires of Mount Doom.

Magic Realm is a medium complexity game of heroic adventuring in a fantasy environment. Players control 1 of 16 characters as they travel the map board have encounters in an attempt to fulfill their individual goals.

The map board is created by alternating players placing hex tiles until all 20 are set. Monsters and treasures are placed randomly for the players to encounter when they enter the hex during game play. Players log their activities for the turn which represents 1 day and can have as many as 4 action phases. Most encounters have reaction tables which are cross-referenced with die rolls for results. Combat is conducted in the spirit of rock-scissors-paper in that players secretly select offensive and defensive actions which are simultaneously revealed and compared for results. At game start players determine which of five categories (treasures, spells, fame, notoriety, gold) their victory points will come from. The players who fulfills their victory point requirements first is the winner.

This game consists of 20 hex tiles, 2 counter sheets, 16 character cards, 1 sheet of spell/treasure cards, 1 personal history pad, 1 rule booklet.

Strictly speaking, this is a 2 player game. However there are a number of scenarios that can be very easily adapted to the single player. Its certainly worth considering. A very nice, versatile game system with a nice mechanism involving left, centre and right flank movement.

The game is very well produced and the inclusion of plastic figures do enhance it. Visit the site for further details.

Described by many as a railroading game in space, this classic title from Avalon Hill uses many elements which come together to form a very interesting game. Players take on the roles of space traders who move their ships through interconnected systems discovering new alien worlds to exploit. As players start to make money delivering commodities in a very unique supply and demand system, their earnings can be used to purchase better ships and equipment, or to buy factories which create better commodities. Ogre is a tactical ground combat game set in the next century. In 2085AD armoured warfare continues - faster and deadlier than ever. Hovercraft, tanks and powered infantry slug it out with tactical nuclear devices. But the most feared weapon of all needs no human guidance. It's the giant cybernetic tank called the Ogre.

The basic version of Ogre gives one player a force or infantry and armour and a command post he must defend. The other player has only one unit - but it's an Ogre. It's an even match.

Ogre plays very well as a solo game in two scenarios ie one person can play both sides, programming the Ogre to charge straight in.

A wild west town lies in ruins and the players try to restore it to its former glory by using clues to the original locations of the buildings on cards. These clues relate a building's position to other buildings, the railroad, and various streets. Each building has a large tile to place on the appropriate spot when its position is definitively determined, and markers to place when there are only a small number of possible locations. Players score points by eliminating these markers by playing clue cards and making deductions. Unique idea, and recommended for deduction game fans. 1 - 5 Player game

Pennant Race

PPhoto

Pennant Race is a baseball game that concentrates not on individual games and the pitcher/batter confrontation but on roster management and trading over an entire season. Real-life players are rated according to their batting average, speed and defense over the previous season and those ratings are used to simulate the outcome of a game on a single dice roll. Over the course of the season, the standings of each club in the league is tracked to see who wins the championship. Provisions are included in the game for injuries and star performances to occur, and mechanics are included for rookie players to be created. The game is designed for solitaire play as well as multiple players, and can be used to simulate the background games of a league in tandem with whatever detailed baseball simulation the user prefers.

This is a 1 to 4 player game. Very nice game that owes something to both Diplomacy and Kingmaker. This is a game with a time limit of 2 to 3 hours. However it does leave itself open to distortion. For example on the final move a player (who had little chance of winning) can take a big gamble to win the game. An alternative suggestion has been to tot up the scores at the end of each round. The winner is the player who has scored consistently well throughout the game rather than just the last round.
